Bringing Sacredness to Western Medicine
Explore a new paradigm for understanding our relationship with medicines and other chemical tools. This workshop examines how our beliefs about consciousness, nature, healing, and what we consider “sacred” shape the way we interact with substances.
We’ll explore ancient relationships with plants and medicines, the nature of consciousness, the role of reverence and intention, and how our relationship with ourselves influences our relationship with chemical tools. We’ll also examine approaches to substances with addictive potential, including the importance of preparation, skill development, intention, integration, and recovery.

Consciousness and our relationship with the natural world
Reverence, intention, and relationship management
Stillness, trauma, and self-awareness
Responsible approaches to chemical tools with addictive potential
Developing greater skill, awareness, and respect in our relationship with medicines
Meet Your Facilitator
Lou Dorian’s decades of experience with psychedelics, plant medicines, and what he calls “chemical tools” have led him to a deeply personal and unconventional understanding of our relationship with substances.Beginning with psychedelics in the 1990s, Lou has explored a wide range of medicines and altered states, developing what he describes as distinct relationships with different chemical tools and the messages, experiences, and perspectives they can reveal.
His journey eventually expanded beyond psychedelics to include opioids, stimulants, and other substances, challenging conventional ideas about drugs, addiction, healing, and recovery. His work explores the possibility of approaching these substances not simply as chemicals or problems to be eliminated, but as powerful tools that can be engaged with consciously, intentionally, and respectfully.
Lou holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics from UC Riverside and is the founder of Psychedelist, where his work is informed by decades of personal exploration, profound loss and trauma, healing, and working with people navigating some of life’s most difficult experiences.
In Chemical Tools: Bringing Sacredness to Western Medicine, Lou invites us to reconsider our relationship with Western drugs and explore what might become possible when intention, reverence, and conscious relationship are brought into the conversation.
